About School of School of Commerce

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela Department of Commerce began its functioning in 2010 with a single batch of 36 students in B.Com Computer Application. In 2012, the Department was enlarged by introducing B.Com with Finance & Taxation and M.Com Finance. The Department intends to render academic excellence to its student community in commerce. Now it has emerged as one of the prominent and the largest department in the college.

The curriculum for commerce followed by the M G University is aimed to develop and promote scientific methods in business with special reference to skill development and proficiency for employment. It also aims at training learners for self-employment and to inculcate aptitude for pursuing higher studies. To accomplish this objective, School of Commerce is therefore occupied with a bunch of highly qualified, experienced, diligent and committed professionals possessing the updated and dilated administrative, scholastic and industry experience. The faculties are rightly handpicked by the institute for the comprehensive development of the students. The teaching process is further augmented by various visiting faculties from esteemed institutions.

Mission

The department is to act as catalyst, facilitator and motivator for the students of Commerce through group efforts and to achieve greater success and make an enhanced contribution in the society by providing opportunities for polishing skills, education and innovative guidance.

Departmental Objectives 2018-19

  • Enhance the Student-Teacher relationship by visiting the house of 10% students of the Department.
  • Publish at least one paper in a UGC recognized Journal by every Faculty members.
  • Arrange at least one external Seminar for all batches.

B.Com

The undergraduate programme of MG University, Kottayam follows the choice based credit system 2017 as envisaged by the University Grants Commission and higher education council of Kerala. The programme shall be completed in six semesters. Each semester is a minimum of 18 instructional weeks comprising 90 working days with continuous internal evaluation and university examination at the end of each semester. The total number of courses for the whole B Com programme is 33 and one project work. It is divided into three heads namely Common Courses, Core Courses, Complimentary Courses and Open Courses. Every student shall be evaluated by 20% internal assessment and 80% external assessment.

Course Objective

B.Com Computer Application

The Objective of B Com Computer Applications programme is to mould the students in the field of Accounting with Information Technology. It will provide conceptual knowledge and skills of its application in the domain of Commerce & IT and enhances the decision making skill of students.

B.Com Finance & Taxation

The Objective of B Com Finance & Taxation programme is to mould the students in the field of Accounting and Taxation. It will provide conceptual knowledge and skills of its application in the domain of Commerce and Taxes and enhances the decision making skill of students.

Eligibility

Admission to B.Com Degree Programme will be open only to candidates who have passed the plus-two of the Higher Secondary Board of Kerala or Pre-Degree of Mahatma Gandhi University or that of any other University or Board of Studies in any state recognised as equivalent to the Plus Two of the Higher Secondary Board of Kerala, with not less than 45% marks in aggregate, is eligible for admission. However, SC/ST, OBC, and other eligible communities shall be given relaxation as per University rules.

M.Com - Finance (2 years)

The M Com Postgraduate programme of M G University follows the Credit Semester System. There are four semesters in the entire course, with two semesters each year. Each semester will have 90 instructional days. There are 5 papers in each semester and one project and comprehensive viva voce at the end of the last semester. The papers in the first three semesters will constitute the core element common to all students who undergo the same course and the papers in the final semester will be the optional component. Every student shall be evaluated by 25% internal assessment and 75% external assessment.

Course Objective

The Objective of M Com Finance programme is to equip the students in the advanced field of Accounting and Taxation. It facilitates the students with competitive skills and abilities to become masters in their career through which their analytical and decision making skill are sharpened.

Eligibility

A pass in B Com / BBA / BBM examination with not less than 45% marks in aggregate.

  • Ms. Reshma V M of M.com’17 Batch cleared UGC NET in December 2018.
  • Ms. Jia Rose of B.Com batch secured an overall A+ grade from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam in 2015.
  • Ms. Reshma V.M of B.Com batch secured 4th position from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam in 2014.
  • Ms. Minu Santhosh, Ms. Pradeep Kaur and Mr. Joel George of B.Com batch secured an overall A+ grade from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam in 2013.

Research/Expertise

Research always helps to provide a justification and rationale for decisions and actions. It helps the faculties to face challenges and become better practitioners. Most of the faculties in the department are engaged with research activities and presented or published papers in academically relevant subjects.

Conference/Seminars

Every day starts with something new, the innovations in various fields cannot be included in the curriculum of students. Seminars are capable of keeping the students updated with the technologies and renewing motivation and confidence. The department takes interest in conducting seminars for every batches in both UG and PG, by inviting eminent personalities who have achieved some feat in the relevant field.

  • The strong growth in the digital banking has made it imperative for banks to transform their existing operations into an omni-channel approach. By taking this in to consideration, a seminar on "Recent trends in banking" has organized on 26-10-2018 to the B.Com 1st semester Students by Mr. V Jayayraj, Manager, Financial Inclusion and Development Department, Reserve Bank of India & Mr. Johnson (Retd.), Union Bank of India.
  • A seminar on GCC VAT & GST India - Implications for career development has organized to the B.Com 6th semester students on 24-01-19 by Edusol Academy, Aluva as it's a recent reform in India.
  • A seminar on " Gateway to financial freedom" has organized to M.Com students to train them to become rational investors on 20-02-19 by Mr. Rajanikanth C S, AVP Academics, Hedge School of Applied Economics, Ernakulam .
  • A seminar on social entrepreneurship has organized to B.Com fourth semester students as it provides a framework for them to find their own success in the pursuit of helping others by Mr. Nithesh K & CMA Pushpy Muriken on 21-03-19.

FDP Organized

FDP’s aims to improve the performance of faculty members in education, research and administration as well as augmenting organizational capacities and culture. To enrich the knowledge of faculties, in 2017-18 department organized a one day Faculty Development Programme on ‘Growing Importance of Tax Education’ by resource persons Mr. Aravindakshan K (Retd.LDM – Union Bank ) and Mr. CA Rajeev Ramnath H (Chartered Accountant).

Outreach / Social Responsibility Programmes

Social outreach programme is meant to provide services to such populations who might otherwise not have access to the same. To inculcate a sense of responsibility among the students towards the society, department takes initiative to conduct many outreach programs like visits to orphanages, old age homes etc. and to provide them with necessities.

National Service Scheme (Nss)

NSS as a voluntary association aims at developing student's personality through community service. It is beneficial both to the students as well as the society. Department has an active NSS wing which conducts multifarious activities on a regular basis like celebration of international yoga day, women’s day, blood donation day etc. It also conducts a seven days rural camp every year in the adopted villages as per the norms of University which helps to inculcate the value of selfless service among the NSS volunteers.

Clubs and Associations

Clubs are platforms where the students explore career options, network, practice their craft, have fun and socialize at the same time. An active and efficacious association Club-Beta has been functioning within the department for many years. The association has an incredible influence on students in their personal and professional upliftment. It organizes many events such as Debate competition, Trade fair, quiz competition etc. An active club for PG students ‘Intenza’ is also effective in the department which helps the students to get a practical learning experience.

Fest

As a part of Commerce Association Club-Beta, the Department has organized a National Level Commerce fest DiVARIO from 2013 onwards. The fest provides a platform to the commerce students to enhance their marketing, managerial and communication skills and for show casting the same. Every year around 250 participants from various colleges exhibit their talents in the fest.

Skill Development Programmes / Training

In the present stage of globalization upgrading skill is much important to escalate the efficacy and quality of labour. The Department offers various Add-on programs for the students like MS-Office, Tally ERP-9.0, Office Automation, Language Development Programs, Tax Practitioner course, bank coaching etc. to bridge the gap between the requirements of the industry and the skills possessed by the students. As a part of placement, department conducts various training and induction programmes for the students like group discussions, mock-interviews, orientation classes etc.

Remedial Coaching

Remedial coaching is a way of preparatory education for academically upgrading the students to achieve an expected level of competency. The department dispenses remedial coaching for students who are deficient in some subjects. The faculties in the department take perceptible effort to aspire the students to overcome their learning and attention issues.

Mentoring

Mentoring program is an ongoing process in the department which build a constructive relationship between mentor and the student. It aims to help the students to perceive things in a pragmatic way. Each mentor is to keep an official record about the mentoring which is highly confidential and is used to make follow-ups if needed. To make this process more fruitful the faculties in the department conduct house visits to around 10 percentage of the total strength.

Study Tour / Industrial Visits

Only theoretical knowledge is not sufficient to build competitive managers. The department organizes study tours every year to the final year students of both UG and PG to aid them to explore new things in an interesting way through visual experience. The department usually takes study tour destinations like Bangalore, Mysore, Chikmagalur, Hyderabad, Wayanad , Coorg, etc Department also offers industrial visits every year for both UG and PG students helping them to interact with professional experts and acquire practical knowledge in their respective areas. Recently conducted industrial visits include Eastern Condiments Pvt. Ltd , Adimaly, Kannan Devan Tea Factory, Munnar, etc.

Parent Teacher Association

“Every Child. One Voice”.
PTA is a forum for parents to obtain knowledge and voice their opinion about their child’s education system. The department regularly organizes PTA meetings and open houses to promote a sense of partnership between parents and teachers for the benefit of students. Course wise open house is usually conducted in the department which clearly communicate the student’s progress in the college and to enlist the parent’s cooperation in the effort to remediate the problems if any.
