About School of Computer Science - UG

School of Computer Science (UG) is preparing its students and team for the future to attain gradual success by adopting various innovative strategies with positive spiraling effect. The Department fulfills its dream of inculcating group dynamics, human skills, and employable skills in the students by conducting various curricular and extra-curricular activities. It also ensures the Student Social Responsibility by doing community services through NSS, outreach activities etc.

It enhances the employability skills by conducting short term courses to bridge the gap between the syllabus and the industry requirements. It encourages student mentoring sessions and remedial sessions to decrease the dropout ratio. The department provides students an idea about the recent happenings beyond their syllabus. It enables the application of theoretical knowledge by giving projects to students.

It conducts subject-oriented seminars, soft-skills based seminars, workshops and other activities for the students to develop their communication skills. Besides the above, we conduct many seminars, workshops and activities to make the best of the student’s potential.

The mission of the School is to persistently strive for achieving excellence in computing disciplines. It is being pursued through its spectrum of academic programmes in computing of contemporary standards.

To produce computing graduates with potential to design and develop systems involving the integration of software and hardware devices; innovative approaches to programming and problem solving as well as creative ways to use Computers; Large scale software systems; and computing infrastructure of an organization.

Course Objective

The BCA Programme is designed with the following specific objectives.

  • To attract young minds to the potentially rich & employable field of computer applications.
  • To be a foundation graduate programme which will act as a feeder course for higher studies in the area of Computer Science / Applications.
  • To develop skills in software development so as to enable the BCA graduates to take up self-employment in Indian & global software market.
  • To Train & Equip the students to meet the requirement of the Industrial standards.
Eligibility

The eligibility for admission to BCA Degree Programme under the Mahatma Gandhi University is a pass in Pre-degree, Plus Two or equivalent examinations in science stream with Mathematics / Computer Science as a compulsory subject.

Research/Expertise

The Department publishes a magazine named Leading Edges since 2017 in order to enhance R&D skills of students & faculty. The key objective is to motivate and encourage the students to explore their ability in publishing papers. One faculty members from the department is currently doing Ph.D. work. Faculty members had published more than 10 papers in International and National Journals. They had also done various paper presentations.

Conference/Seminars

Computer Science students and faculty members participate in a number of ongoing seminars and workshops sponsored by the department. Seminars and conferences are very common and popular means of interactive fora in modern day business world. Used effectively they can play a vital role in the dissemination of knowledge and build-up of skills. They facilitate intense deliberations through participation and interaction in an organized manner.

  • SCS (UG) regularly conducting motivational classes.
  • Induction programme were organized for BCA16 batch on 28/07/16 by Mr. Ram Mohan, CEO of Eduynet.
  • Charles Jammu from Logic Institute, Cochin conducted a seminar on the topic “Data Analytics”.
  • NIPM conducted 10 days APTITUTE TRAINING programme for final year students in the month of November.
  • Conducted seminars on topics such as Data Analytics, Hadoop etc.
  • Started a programme called ‘Reize ‘which conducted Placement training programmes for Final year and pre final year students.
  • Bridge Course were organized for BCA18 batch from19/07/18 to 25/07/18.
  • MCA Placement director Mr. Joseph Paul gave training on “Group Discussion and tips to handle an interview procedure” for final year students.
  • A mock Placement Training is organized by Pragmatix to BCA16 batch.
  • One Day workshop on digital marketing by ILIAM, Kochi for BCA17 batch.

FDP Organized

The department organizes many faculty development programs (FDPs) which have proven to be successful for improving teaching skills among faculty members. Faculty members are also encouraged to attend inter college as well as intra college FDPs. FDPs produce promising outcomes in the learning and teaching practices. Teachers in higher education should attend FDP training activities on regular basis for collaboration, professional growth, management and leadership abilities.

  • Conducted a Faculty Development Programme on Android on 4th & 5th April 2019
  • Conducted a Faculty Development Programme on Data Analytics with R –The Fundamentals on 2017

Outreach / Social Responsibility Programmes

The department organizes various outreach as well as social responsibility programmes for the students every year. The unique quality of an outreach & social responsibility program is that it provides students the ability to gather themselves in a unifying, team-building, hands-on practical activity that is fun and help the needy ones in the society. These programs aims to encourage the participation of the students in social development works and collaborate with community-based organizations and institutions in their efforts to promote loving, equitable, and humane society.

  • BCA students got involved in college flood relief programmes.
  • NSS Volunteers from our department participated in rural camp conducted at Sreemoolanagaram.
  • Organized Cancer Awareness ProgrammeCAP@Campus for entire college.
  • Started Hair Donation Campaign for Cancer patients.
  • NSS Volunteers from our department participated in rural camp at parapuram.

Clubs and Associations

The college has various clubs to enhance extra-curricular skills of our students. The students of Computer Science Department (UG) actively participate in various clubs like Dance club, Music Club, Nature club etc. The department organizes an association program ‘Techno Riderz' every year.

Fest

As per the culture of De Paul Institute of Science & Technology, every academic year, Departments organize technical fest for higher secondary students. These fests are organized every year with the objective to provide platform for the students to showcase their talent with a competitive spirit.

  • The fest was organized on 11th January 2017 had a grand touch, as Mr. Sreejith IPS, IG Cochin Range was present as the chief guest of the event.

Skill Development Programmes / Training

The Computer Science Department (UG) organizes various training programmes for its students. The training sessions help to organize and facilitate learning and development process among students. Expedite acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for effective job performance. Provide students with career growth opportunities consistent with corporate goals, objectives, and strategies. The emphasis is to skill the students in such a way that they get employment and also improve entrepreneurship. Provides training, support and guidance for their career development. The main goal is to create opportunities, space and scope for the development of the talents among students.

  • The department is conducting a programme called REIZE to give the soft skill development training to the students.
  • Short term courses were given to the final year and second year students.
  • Bridge course was given to First year students.

Remedial Coaching

The faculty members of the department conducts special remedial coaching for the weaker students. It aims at improving the academic skills and linguistic proficiency of the students in the various subjects and raising their level of comprehension in such subjects where qualitative technical and laboratory work is involved and reduce their failure and dropout rate. The main objectives of remedial coaching is to strengthen their knowledge, skills and attitudes in such subjects, where quantitative and qualitative techniques are involved so that the necessary guidance and training provided may enable the students to pursue higher studies efficiently. It prepares slower students for competitive exams.

Mentoring

The department considers mentoring of students as immensely important. We have accepted the value of mentoring and the faculty members try to informally mentor the students. They constantly encourage students to come forward with their ideas at all stages of development. Students are motivated to expand their skills. Faculty members are approachable and help in advancing the academic and professional goals through sharing guidance, experience and expertise. Students come from an increasingly diverse background, therefore teachers personally interact and try to help them to adapt to changes in a graceful manner. So that they can handle stressful or difficult situation well. It also lowers stress level and builds confidence in the students.

Study Tour / Industrial Visits

Study Tour & Industrial visit has its own importance in a career of a student who is pursuing a professional degree. It is considered as a part of college curriculum and objectives of industrial visit is to provide students an insight regarding internal working of companies. We know, theoretical knowledge is not enough for making a good professional career. With an aim to go beyond academics, industrial visit provides student a practical perspective on the world of work.

  • Through Industrial visits students learned Industry practices and procedures. The outcome of this visit was not limited to that learning but also extended to Placement offer for our Students.
  • Students of BCA16 visited UST Global at info park campus in Cochin on 31/07/2018.

Parent Teacher Association

“Every Child. One Voice”.
PTA is a forum for parents to obtain knowledge and voice their opinion about their child’s education system. The department regularly organizes PTA meetings and open houses to promote a sense of partnership between parents and teachers for the benefit of students. Course wise open house is usually conducted in the department which clearly communicate the student’s progress in the college and to enlist the parent’s cooperation in the effort to remediate the problems if any.

Placements

The Department of Computer Science (UG) is frequently organizing many recruitment drives for the placement of our students. Campus placements conducted under the department provide jobs to students pursuing or in the stage of completing the programme. In this programme, industries visit the colleges to select students depending on their ability to work, capability, focus and aim. Placement and follow-up aims at ensuring whether the students who have been selected are placed suitably in the job and does the job well.
