About School of Social Work

De Paul School of Social Work was started in the year 2004 with a vision of imparting high quality education in professional Social Work to meet the growing needs of welfare professionals around the globe. The School offers a four semester Post Graduate Program in Social Work (MSW). Social Work, being a budding profession in India has high altitudes to move up and foreseeing this, the Department has designed its programmes with unique specialties like, International Students and Faculty exchange programmes, IT enabled training, training on software, participatory research models, latest reflective practices for student enrichment, etc. Student led projects, Student's own association, job oriented placements /field work practicum and International faculties, are some of the learning familiarities of our students. International student exchange programmes with James Cook University, Australia, International placements, language training, Research and development team, Publications, International Conference etc. are some of our achievements. International Conference and Student's Meet, De Novo, organizing every year is also a unique experience for our students to learn by doing.

Courses Offered

Master of Social Work (MSW) with Three specializations namely
  • Medical & Psychiatric Social Work
  • Community Development and
  • Family & Child Welfare.

Eligibility for Admission

Candidates for admission to the first semester of the MSW programme shall be required to have passed any degree examination with a minimum of 45%marks of Mahatma Gandhi University as specified or any other examination of any recognised University or authority accepted by the Academic Council of Mahatma Gandhi University as equivalent thereto.

Admission Process

Out of a total of 30 seats, admission for 50% of seats will be done through MG University PG Centralized Allotment Process (PGCAP) and the other 50% will be through Management Allotment. Admission to Management Quota is selective and is based on the merit and interview ranking. Application forms can be acquired from the college office or can be downloaded from the web site.

Aim of the Programme

  • To facilitate learners to develop the foundations of social work practice by providing the theoretical input on the philosophy, values, methods, fields and approaches of human service profession and human resource management.
  • To develop a professional approach in addressing human societal needs and become effective and efficient change agents in the social milieu.

Research/Expertise

The faculty members supervise final year students in completing their research work. The department also collaborate with De Paul Extension Services to conduct studies in the areas of community development.

Conference / Seminars

De Novo, a venture initiated by De Paul School of Social Work started in 2009 as a state level seminar. Later after the collaboration with JCU, Australia, De Novo progressed from a South Indian Social Work students’ Meet to an International Social Work students’ Meet. The purpose of conducting such an event is to proclaim the motto "A BETTER WORLD TO LIVE IN".
The conference is intended to allow discussion and consideration of a wide range of issues relating to social work. We organize National /International Conference every alternate year. Workshops and intercollegiate fests are also organized and students are also encouraged to attend conference/seminar in other colleges

FDP

The institution organise various faculty development programmes every year with a mind to upgrade and update the knowledge and skills of its members.

Outreach / Social Responsibility Programmes

A good number of extension and outreach programs are organized by the department of social work for the last few years. With the Nedumbaseery panchayath the students were insisted to do a case study on airport and climate change in Nedumbassery. With the NULM, a survey was done to know the life standard of the street vendors in 2016. The department is also very much interested to observe world aids ay, Anti Narcotic day, Women’s Day, World health day, environment day, world social work day etc., and conducted many awareness programme through street plays and other participatory programs in various communities for past years and still continue the same with strong conviction and enthusiasm. Outreach programs are also given prime focus by the social work department and all those programs are coordinated with De Paul Extension Service. Social Impact Analysis, Blood donation camps, skill development classes for the school children, health education for Anganwady children, income generation program for women, free medical camps are examples for the extension activities

Clubs and Associations

Our department has a students’ association called Student Association of De Paul School of Social Work (SADESS). It was formed in 2009 with an empirical aim of providing an avenue for the students to apply theory into practice. Under the banner of SADESS, students take initiatives in many ways to organize activities to excel the social commitment and it helps the students to strengthen their interpersonal relationship and change their attitude in adhere to the social work profession. The important activities include: observing socially relevant important days or events, street plays, conducting/organizing awareness classes or seminars, planting trees, organizing medical and blood donation camp, nature camp, Christmas celebration for specially abled children etc.

FEST

DE NOVO and JINGLE BELSS are the two important fest that is been organised by De Paul School of Social Work. This has been a great platform for students to develop their skills, knowledge, values and professional attitude as these programmes are being organised by student themselves. Social work students across the nation participate in students’ meet, De Novo. This event would be enriched with various competitions like, street play, theme show, theme dance, poster presentation, paper presentation, Best social work team, Quiz, Extempore, Debate etc. Jingle Bells is a Christmas oriented celebration for differently abled students from nearby schools. In 2020 the school of social work is organising the 10th Jingle Bells with more colour.

Training & Skill Development Programmes

Social Work department imparts intensive training and developmental programmes to our students for not only academic level but also the comprehensive development of each social work aspirants. Students’ innate potentials and limitations to focus upon for the enhancement is assessed by the social work experts and based upon the student analysis training modules are prepared and instructed. English spoken and written training, project writing workshops, street theatre training, computer and essential software training for research and development, individual training for job preparations etc. are the very few kits our alumni students always appreciate about the advantage they received while studying with De Paul School of Social Work. We instil new strengths and new thoughts every day to drive our students to always look forward to positivity and hope.

Remedial Coaching

The department strives to develop specific competencies of the students that may contribute to their academic and professional success. The department provides remedial coaching for the students who need special care and support in academics. The help is given by all the faculty members as per the need. The classes are conducted without disturbing the regular instructional hours.

Mentoring

The department provides mentoring to each students for their qualitative becoming. It benefits the students to be more effective in their academic performance. every faculty members play a vital role in the functioning of mentoring process like helping the students to identify the issues and confront with the same, to develop various skills, to facilitates students’ growth by sharing resources and networks, to Challenges the students to move beyond his or her comfort zone and to create a safe learning environment for taking risks. Thus the focus is given to the total development of the students.

Study Tour/Industrial Visits

Every year third semester students organise study tour to different places outside Kerala. Throughout this visit, students get the opportunity to visit various social work institutions based on their specialisation. These years we have visited organisations in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Hyderabad and Mysore
Social Work Students get the opportunity to visit various social work institutions. In each semester they visit at least five agencies to know more about social work settings.

Parent Teacher Association

The department take initiative to meet parents at least once in a semester. There would be two parents for each batch of students as their representative.

Placements

Our Placement Cell aims for the 100% placement for our students and at the same time students who would like to proceed with higher education is given career counselling to help them understand the future scope and prospects.
Our alumnus, work with governmental and non-governmental organizations across the world according to the specialization they choose during the MSW programme. We have our old graduates both study and work in Australia, Canada, UK, Newzealand, Saudi Arabia, Dubai etc. Students who work in India mainly work with medical and psychiatric hospital setting, community development agencies, family counselling centres, child welfare clinics, special schools, programmes officer/coordinator in various government and NGO projects, Kudumbashree officer, CSR officer, PROs in companies and hospitals, school counsellor, patient counsellor, counsellor in old age homes, research assistant and social worker etc.
Our experienced social work teachers work as a team, network with national and international institutions and universities to get best placements with good pay scale. Be part of the proud social work fraternity, let’s walk together, learn together and build our society together.

Student & Faculty Exchange Programmes

De Paul School of Social Work has continuous student exchange programmes with James Cook University (JCU), Australia. Every year a team of more than Ten JCU students along with faculty member stay in our campus and it enable our students and college to improve cultural competency and broader mind. Likewise, at least three students and a faculty from De Paul School of Social Work visit JCU for a period of one month and imbibe social work practices, learning and cultural perceptiveness from Australia. Ever since the collaboration between JCU and DIST, this exchange programme has been a high demand programme. Both JCU and DiST collaboratively support students and faculty members in accomplishing this programme. 2020 is a remarkable year in the history of school of social work because we are celebrating the 10th year of the collaboration between the DiST and JCU with a number of grand events.
