About School of Computer Science

School of Computer Science had its beginning in 2002 with the objective of helping students harvest the benefits of the IT revolution that swept through every facet of modern human life for the past two decades. Our whole effort is in helping students become Industry Ready while they complete their degree with flying colors. The curriculum is designed considering the current trends and changes taking place in the field of Information Technology and various application areas. Sessions combine theoretical studies with hands-on application in the computer laboratory.

Department has a team of efficient, experienced & dedicated faculty members who works for the academic and interpersonal skill development of the students. The overall student’s development is ensured by the department through various orientation programmes, aptitude trainings, seminars & personality enhancement programmes.


The mission of the school is to persistently strive for achieving excellence in computing disciplines. Our courses enable the students to be updated on the latest revolution in technology and equip them with the required skills and knowledge to be industry ready. The sustained effort is to produce computing graduates with potential to design and develop systems involving the integration of software and hardware devices. A sound understanding of mathematical ideas is needed throughout the degree, both for potential applications such as scientific computation and for reasoning rigorously about the specification and behavior of programs. Practical skills must also be developed and the majority of subjects within the course are linked with practical works that assures academic excellence.

MCA Regular (2 years)

MCA is a 3-year course comprising of 6 semesters. The first five semesters of MCA has 7 papers each of either theory or practical and the last semester is dedicated for Academic Project. The course has 25 theory papers and 10 lab papers. The fifth semester includes a Mini Project of one-month duration. The total theory sessions are grouped into 3 spans, 15, 15, and 20 classes respectively in each span. Student’s performance during each span is assessed by conducting internal & model examinations. Active involvement of students in teaching learning process is assured via academic seminars and assignments throughout the semesters. A semester viva is being conducted at the end of each semester to improve their confidence level. The department injects energy to the students to improve themselves and direct them to prepare assignments, conduct seminars and publish journals.

Course Objective

The objective of the MCA programme is to prepare post graduates for productive careers in software industry, corporate sector, Govt. organizations and academia by providing skill based environment for teaching and research in the core and emerging areas of the discipline. The Programmes thrust is on giving the students a thorough and sound background in theoretical and skill-oriented courses relevant to the latest computer software development. The programme emphasizes the application of software technology to solve mathematical, computing, communications/networking and commercial problems. This Master’s Degree Programme has been designed with a semester approach in mind. The first year courses are aimed at skills development in computers using various technologies, the second year is more focused on core courses providing conceptual frame work and the third year provides the specialization and the project work.


Passed BCA/ Bachelor Degree in Computer Science Engineering or equivalent Degree.

OR Passed B.Sc. / B.Com. / B.A. with Mathematics at 10+2 Level or at Graduation Level (with additional bridge Course as per the norms of the concerned Unniversity)

Integrated MCA (5 years)

Integrated MCA is a 5 year course with 10 semesters. The course has 43 theory papers and 15 lab papers. The 6th semester includes a software development project-1 of one-month duration. The 8th semester has an academic mini project & 10th semester has an academic main project. Student’s performance during each span is assessed by conducting internals & model examinations. Active involvement of students in teaching learning process is assured via academic seminars and assignments throughout the semesters. A semester viva is being conducted at the end of each semester to improve their confidence level. With the dynamic changes taking place in the software industry the need for mathematically trained software professionals are growing day by day. To cope with this demand, the department of computer science has introduced a new PG programme namely 5-year Integrated MCA (combined BCA and MCA). Integrated MCA Programme provides students with the facility to secure an MCA in 5 years after their Plus Two without the hassles of going through the admission process after their Undergraduate Degree Programme. During the course of study, the respective faculty take individual attention to encourage the students to prepare assignments, conduct seminars and publish journals.

Course Objective

The main objective of this dual degree programme is to prepare students to face the challenges in software industry and academia by providing an excellent teaching, practices and research oriented environment. The course aims at inculcating essential skills as demanded by the global software industry through interactive learning process. It is designed to build programming skills for developing highly efficient software, websites, mobile applications, machine learning applications and GPS based navigation system. This also includes team-building skills, audio- visual presentations and personality development programmes. The programme enhances analytical and communication skill besides inculcating the virtues of self-study. The Curriculum has been designed to cater to the ever changing demands of information technology along with necessary inputs from the Industry.


A candidate seeking admission to Integrated MCA course must have a pass with not less than 45% marks in 10+2 level with Physics and Mathematics in X standard along with one of the Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational Subject/any stream in XII standard. Subject to the regulation relating to prescribed minimum of the respective qualifying examination, the minimum marks for admission to the Course of studies shall be 40% in the case of candidates belonging to reserved category. Candidates belonging to socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) referred to GO (P)208/66/Edn dated. 2-5-96 and subsequent amendments to order issued by the Government shall be given a relaxation of 3% marks in the prescribed minimum for admission and 5% for OEC. A relaxation of 5% marks from the prescribed minimum shall be allowed in the case of physically handicapped persons. Reservation of seats shall be as per rules prescribed in the relevant rules by the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Kerala / MG University.

MSc Computer Engineering & Network Technology

The four semester programme is designed with the purpose of developing professionals in the field of Computer Networking Technologies. The First Semester consists of seven papers which includes C++ Lab, Digital Logic & Microprocessor Lab and a Mini Project. The Second Semester consists of another seven papers which includes Java Programming Lab & a Mini Project. The seven papers in the Third semester include an Elective, a Mini Project using Visual Programming Tools, the Networking Lab and Seminar. The Fourth Semester is entirely devoted to the Project & General Viva Voce.

Course Objective

Provide knowledge, skills and a critical appreciation of the principles of Computer Engineering & Networking Technology. Enable students to analyze a system, design an appropriate custom solution and develop subject related practical skills. Provides students with the opportunities to develop written and oral communication skills. Prepare them for employment, research, further study and lifelong learning by developing their intellectual, problem-solving, practical and key (transferable) skills.


Graduation in Information Technology/Computer Science/Electronics or B.Sc. Degree with Mathematics/Computer Science/Statistics as one of the subjects or BCA with not less than CCPA of 5.00 out of 10.00 in core group(Core + Complementary + Open Courses).


The Department publishes E-Journal ‘Dataquest’ every year in order to enhance R&D skills of the students & faculty. The students of the department actively participate in Intra College & Inter College Tech Fest, University Youth festivals etc. They have also shown their merit by securing ranks in the university examinations. The Faculty members of the department participate in various Faculty development programmes, online courses and publish research papers.

  • Ms. Anu Varghese of MSC 2015 Batch has secured 1st rank in M.Sc. CE&NT from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
  • Ms. Keerthi Jayakumar of MSC 2015 Batch has securing 1st rank in M.Sc. CE&NT from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
  • Mr. Sundeep Soman & Nobin Antony of MSC13 has secured 1st and 2nd rank in M.Sc. CE &NT from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
  • Ms.Sona Mary Louis of MCA 2011 batch bagged the university first Rank.


The Department publishes E-Journal ‘Dataquest’ every year in order to enhance R&D skills of students & faculty. The key objective of the E-Journal is to motivate and encourage the students to explore their ability in publishing papers. The academic visibility of the institution is improved through research and publication initiatives by the teaching fraternity. Most of the faculty members are actively involved in research work. The Department aims at enhancing the academic and intellectual environment in the Institutions by providing faculty members with enough opportunities to pursue research. INNOVISION-“A Vision for Innovation” MCA Association presents Publication of Data Quest (E-Journal) every year. 2 faculty members from the department are currently doing their Ph.D. work & 8 of them had successfully completed their M.Phil degree. Faculty members had published more than 25 papers in International and National Journals. They had also done various paper presentations.

Conference / Seminars

Computer Science students and faculty members participate in a number of ongoing seminars and workshops sponsored by the department. Seminars and conferences are very common and popular means of interactive fora in modern day business world. Used effectively they can play a vital role in the dissemination of knowledge and build-up of skills. They facilitate intense deliberations through participation and interaction in an organized manner.

  • On 27th February 2018 a seminar on ‘IPv4-IPv6’ was organized by the department. It was conducted by Protocol41, Kochi.The seminar was conducted for 59 students of MCA15-(L) 16&MSc16 batch students. The internet has undoubtedly become a huge part of our lives. Many people in today’s generation are relying on the internet to do a lot of different tasks. IPV4-IPV6 is an internet protocol necessary for Internet-enabled devices to communicate.
  • On 5th December 2017 a seminar on ‘Digital Marketing’ was organized by the department. It was conducted by “DigiAcharya” group. The seminar was organized for all 2017 batch students. Today, the Internet is a boon that provides endless opportunities for your small, medium or large business. Currently, more than half of the global population uses the Internet. Experts say that in coming years above 80% of the world population will be online. Therefore, digital marketing has become an integral part of marketing.
  • On 30th November 2017 a seminar on ‘Biometric Verification’ was organized by the department. The seminar was organized for all integrated MCA students. The seminar was conducted by CIAT Pvt.Ltd. Biometrics allows a person to be identified and authenticated based on a set of recognizable and verifiable data, which are unique and specific to them. Faced with document fraud and identity theft, with new threats such as terrorism or cybercrime, and faced with the understandable changes in international regulations, new technological solutions are gradually being implemented. One of these technologies, Biometrics has quickly established itself as the most pertinent means of identifying and authenticating individuals in a reliable and fast way, through the use of unique biological characteristics.
  • On 2th August 2017 a SEO seminar was organized by the department. The seminar was conducted by Three Seas, Trivandrum. The seminar was arranged for MCA15-(L) 16 batch students and M.Sc.16 batch students. The right website is the one which will fetch business for you. This is why Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become critical for the survival on the World Wide Web. The process of bringing a higher ranking on the Search Engine Result Page is done through a process of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The possibility of potential clients clicking and coming into your website increases as a result. This will help to boost the business.
  • As part of Debuds 2014, a seminar on “Android Applications” was conducted by the department. It was arranged for the MCA12& MCA 13 batches. The seminar was conducted by COSAK technologies, Trivandrum. Android app ecosystem is diverse and its usage is changing people lives. It clear that Android app Development Company which develops unique app is in huge demand. And, a well-designed app is most important tool that person uses to access information.

FDP Organized

The department organizes many faculty development programs (FDPs) which have proven to be successful for improving teaching skills among faculty members. Faculty members are also encouraged to attend inter college as well as intra college FDPs. FDPs produce promising outcomes in the learning and teaching practices. Teachers in higher education should attend FDP training activities on regular basis for collaboration, professional growth, management and leadership abilities.

  • The School of Computer science (PG) conducted a faculty development program on Cloud Computing on 30/06/2018 by Mr.Pankaj Kumar G, Assistant Professor, and Fisat as the resource person. The workshop was attended by 29 members from DIST and outside the college. The workshop was effective and useful for the staff members. Cloud computing is becoming an adoptable technology for many of the organizations with its dynamic scalability and usage of virtualized resources as a service through the Internet. It will likely have a significant impact on the educational environment in the future.
  • The School of Computer Science conducted a faculty development program on Step-2 Research on 19th& 20th of September 2014. The FDP was attended by the faculty members of DIST. Writing a research paper is in part about learning how to teach yourself. There is no better way to hone the skills of life-long learning than by writing individual research papers. The process forces you to ask good questions, find the sources to answer them, present your answers to an audience, and defend your answers against detractors. Those are skills that you will use in any profession you might eventually pursue.
  • The School of Computer Science conducted a faculty development program on Cloud Computing. It was a two day programme conducted on 6th & 7th June 2013. The FDP was attended by 20 intra college faculty members along with the inter college faculty members of DIST. Cloud computing is changing businesses in many ways. Whether it is the way they store their data or how they protect their secure information, cloud computing is benefitting all businesses in every sector.

Outreach / Social Responsibility Programmes

The department organizes various outreach as well as social responsibility programmes for the students every year. The unique quality of an outreach & social responsibility program is that it provides students the ability to gather themselves in a unifying, team-building, hands-on practical activity that is fun and help the needy ones in the society. These programs aims to encourage the participation of the students in social development works and collaborate with community-based organizations and institutions in their efforts to promote loving, equitable, and humane society.

  • Two days outreach camp ‘Ponthooval’ for MCAL18, MSC18, MCA18 & IMCA18 was conducted at Ezhathumugam. The program was conducted on 17th & 18th December 2018. Related to the camp, a dental camp was arranged for the residence of the area.
  • Rural camp “Ithalukal” was conducted for 2017 batch students at Devagiri from 17.1.18 to 19.1.18. The students actively participated in cleaning up activities around the Devagiri Panchayat. Along with that they volunteered an ENT camp which was set at St. Sebastian church for the residents of Devagiri by the LF hospital in association with computer science department. Students took initiative to invite the residents at devagiri to the ENT camp.
  • “INNOVISION 2015” was conducted in the department. It was inaugurated by Prof (Dr) Balbir S Barn, Deputy Dean School of Science and Technology, Middlesex University, London, England. Along with that we had a technical talk on “The value of privacy security & autonomy in a hyper connected world: A case study of youth justice in England” for all students of the department on 11th December 2014.
  • INNOVISION 2014 –Association programs were conducted on 3rd September 2014. It was inaugurated by Dr.Varghese Paul, CUSAT, and chief guest for the ceremony. The inauguration was followed by a seminar on “Data security using cryptography” on 20th November 2013.

Clubs and Associations

The college has various clubs to enhance extra-curricular skills of our students. The students of Computer Science department actively participate in various clubs like Dance club, Music Club, Nature club etc. The department organizes an association program ‘Innovision’ every year.

  • “INNOVISION 2017” was conducted in the department. PGCS association it was inaugurated by Mr. Preet Peter, Senior Quality Coordinator, Wipro Technologies. Related with this the students had a seminar on Cyber Crimes handled by Mr. Thwalhath, Civil Police Officer, Cyber cell, Ernakulum on 29th November 2016.
  • Stem cell & blood donation camp conducted as a part of DeTecknista 2K17 in associations with Blood Donors Kerala (BDK), Datri and Lourde’s Hospital Ernakulam on 27th January 2017. The staff members as well as students of DIST had shown their active participation in the camp.
  • Residential camp “Navadeepam 2016” for first year students of MCA, MCADD, MCA (L) & M.Sc. to Kuttambuzha on 10th& 11th of November 2016. The students of 2016 batch took initiative to innovate an old age home at Kuttampuzha Panchayat & also actively participated in constructing a well for the old age home as well as cleaned the surrounding of the old age home.


As per the culture of DePaul Institute of Science & Technology, every academic year, Departments organize inter college technical fest for aspirants assembling from various colleges with a very high competitive spirit to participant and with the strong determination to include their achievements & accomplishments to their resumes. These fests are organized every year with the objective to provide platform for the students to showcase their talent with a competitive spirit. The department also organizes various conferences to bring together leading academic scientists, researchers and research scholars to exchange and share their experiences and research results.

  • A two-day National IT fest- DeTecknista2K17 of Computer Science Department was conducted on 7th& 8th of February 2017. The Fest was inaugurated by Dr. Arun Marar, Head of Data Science & Lighting the lamp Analytics, Orion India Ltd. Lt. Lovji K.N, Assistant professor, Vimala College, Trissur gave the keynote address. 405 students from 43 colleges participated in the fest. Ten competitive events were hosted in the fest namely Coding, Gaming, Best Personality, Photography, Word Hunt, Choreography, Treasure Hunt, Quiz and Online Groupfie Contest. Ms. Gayathri R Suresh, Cine Artist and Former Miss Kerala inaugurated the cultural extravaganza.
  • NACORE-16, a three-day national conference on Research in Emerging areas was conducted in our college on 28th& 29th January 2016, organized by PGCS using A-view tool. Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirappally has organized. Annual National Conferences on major research areas of current interest titled NACORE (National Conference on Research in Emerging Areas) during 28-30 January 2016, jointly be organized by the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering and Computer Applications. The themes of NACORE-16 are Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Semantic Web, Ontology Engineering, Distributed Systems and Current Trends & Global Perspectives in Computing. The conference provides opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face-to-face on the various aspects of Cyber Security and to discuss the practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted.
  • IT fest DETECKNISTA 2K16 was conducted. The Fest was inaugurated by Ms. Baby Rekha Mathew, Head-India campus relationship UST –Global. Ms.Neethu joy, Location campus manager, Global campus hiring team, WIPRO gave the keynote address Mr.Oomen P Joshua, General manager,TELK addressed the gathering and released doodle of Detecknista 2016. 75 Students from 12 different colleges inside and outside Kerala participated in the fest. Ten competitive events were hosted in the fest namely coding, gaming, best personality, photo collage, word hunt, choreography, hungama, doodle, treasure hunt and quiz and all the students lively participated in the events. The champions were Rajagiry College, Kakanad. Valedictory session started at 3:30pm Fr. Paul Paraekattel VC, Councilor for Popular Mission, Retreats & Pastrol, Mary Matha Province, Vincentian Congregation, and Angamly, Kochi delivered the valedictory message. Prizes for the winners were distributed and thus the fest went by successfully.
  • Detecknista -2015 was conducted on 7th& 8th of January 2015. The program was inaugurated by Mr. Rajesh Nair, Associate Director, Markets Ernst & Young, Kochi and the keynote address was delivered by Mr. Tojo Thomas, National Campus Manager, at WIPRO. 117 students from 23 colleges participated in the same.
  • Detecknista-2014 –National IT fest was conducted on 13th&14th March 2014. The program was inaugurated by Mr. P. M. Rajagopal, AGM, RBI, Kerala and the Keynote Address was delivered by Mr. P. K. Rajesh, Director & Head, Information, Media & Entertainment, Cognizant, Cochin. 96 students from 16 various colleges participated in the program.

Training & Skill Development Programmes

The Computer Science department organizes various training programmes for its students. The training sessions help to organize and facilitate learning and development process among students. Expedite acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for effective job performance. Provide students with career growth opportunities consistent with corporate goals, objectives, and strategies.

The emphasis is to skill the students in such a way that they get employment and also improve entrepreneurship. Provides training, support and guidance for their career development. The main goal is to create opportunities, space and scope for the development of the talents among students.

  • Motivation & confidence building class by Mr. L.P Lawrence, Peak performance coach for MCA (L) 17, MCA17 & M.SC.17 batches on 8th January 2018.
  • Life skills class organized by Chanakya IAS Academy, Delhi for MCA15-(L) 16 batch on 10th November 2017.
  • Motivation class conducted exclusively for MCADD batches by team “Carpe Diem” on 18th August 2017.
  • Motivation classes for DDmca15 by Professional Trainer Mr.Ranjith Kesavan on 17th August 2016.
  • Motivational class was arranged for msc15, mcal15, mca14 batches. By Harriesh Kumar, JCI international trainer on 27th July 2016.

Remedial Coaching

The faculty members of the department conducts special remedial coaching for the weaker students. It aims at improving the academic skills and linguistic proficiency of the students in the various subjects and raising their level of comprehension in such subjects where qualitative technical and laboratory work is involved and reduce their failure and dropout rate. The main objectives of remedial coaching is to strengthen their knowledge, skills and attitudes in such subjects, where quantitative and qualitative techniques are involved so that the necessary guidance and training provided may enable the students to pursue higher studies efficiently. It prepares slower students for competitive exams.


The department considers mentoring of students as immensely important. We have accepted the value of mentoring and the faculty members try to informally mentor the students. They constantly encourage students to come forward with their ideas at all stages of development. Students are motivated to expand their skills. Faculty members are approachable and help in advancing the academic and professional goals through sharing guidance, experience and expertise. Students come from an increasingly diverse background, therefore teachers personally interact and try to help them to adapt to changes in a graceful manner. So that they can handle stressful or difficult situation well. It also lowers stress level and builds confidence in the students.

Study Tour/Industrial Visits

Study Tour & Industrial visit has its own importance in a career of a student who is pursuing a professional degree. It is considered as a part of college curriculum and objectives of industrial visit is to provide students an insight regarding internal working of companies. We know, theoretical knowledge is not enough for making a good professional career. With an aim to go beyond academics, industrial visit provides student a practical perspective on the world of work.

  • DDMCA14 study tour to Goa with Ms.Dinu mol Philip & Mr. Joseph Paul, Faculty Members of Computer Science from 15th October to 17th October 2018 was conducted.
  • DDMCA16 study tour to Chikmanglore, Coorg with Ms.Jismy Varghese & Mr. Raju Tharayil, Faculty members of Computer Science from 26th September 2018 to 29th September 2018 was conducted.
  • Students of MCA15-(L)16 and MSc16 went for a study tour to Ooty, Kodaikanal and Hoggenakkal from 29th January 2018 to 2nd February 2018
  • Industrial visit to UST global for MCA (L) 17, MCA16 on 4th January 2018.
  • Industrial visit to UST Global, InfoPark Kakkanad for MCA15-(L) 16 on 16th November 2018.

Parent Teacher Association

Computer Science Department conducts open houses & PTA on a regular basis. Students’ academic performance is assessed based on 2 internal examinations & one model examination. PTA Meetings & Open houses are usually arranged once or twice a year at progress reporting periods. They are brief meetings, lasting about 10-30 minutes. A parent-teacher conference is a great opportunity to share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, testing data, assessments, portfolios, and assignments. You can be better informed about students' strengths, needs, behaviors, and learning styles. Can discuss enrichment or intervention strategies to support students' learning & also issues that may be interfering with students' learning and growth.


The Department of Computer Science is frequently organizing many recruitment drives for the placement of our students. Campus placements conducted under the department provide jobs to students pursuing or in the stage of completing the programme. In this programme, industries visit the colleges to select students depending on their ability to work, capability, focus and aim. Placement and follow-up aims at ensuring whether the students who have been selected are placed suitably in the job and does the job well.
