About School of English

School of English has been designed to sharpen the skills and polish the innate abilities of the students by a feasible inception into the academics and priming them with advanced systems, so as to transmute into the most eligible by sensing clearly the drift of the educational scenario.

It started to function in 2012 as a stream of the department of Media and Communication and in 2018 June the department was ascribed an independent status, aiming at focused functioning and meeting finer goals.

Course Offered

B.A. English Literature, Communication and Journalism (Triple Main)

The department offers a sophisticated triple main graduate programme in English Literature, Communication and Journalism. The affinity of the department with the School of Media offers a head start exposure to the students. The fully fledged Journalism department and the access to the state of the art Media floor and Studio make the learning of this course at DiST a unique experience.

Objective of the Programme

BA English Literature Communication and Journalism is a three tier Programme, intended to mould graduates with thorough exposure in various tenants of literature at the same time equip them with the basics and latest developments both in print and visual media . The course also aims at fine-tune the communication skills of the students. After the completion of the programme the students can pursue their higher studies in English Language and Literature, Communication or in Journalismor else they can be placed in media or other relevant fields.


A pass in Plus Two or equivalent examination or an examination recognised by MG University as equivalent thereto


It was a moment of proud that the Department won the overall Championship in the DiST Arts and Sports Fest. The Department also became the Arts Champions of the College. A good number of students participated in the M G University Fest and had ‘A’ grade performance. School of English publishes a department magazine 'Lanterns', which gives a firsthand experience of publishing and offers an avenue to exhibit their creative and journalistic talents. The students of the department actively participate in Intra College & Inter College Fest and the University Youth Festivals. The Faculty members of the department participate in various Faculty development programmes, attend Online courses and publish research papers.

  • Ms. Anu Abraham of 2014 Batch secured 7th Position in BA ENGLISH(Triple Main) 2017 Examination Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
  • Ms. Mahalakshmi of 2015 Batch secured 10th position in BA ENGLISH(Triple Main) 2018 Examination of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
  • Ms. Anjitha a student of BA English 2017 batch is performing Slam poems. Her poems were published in Kitab by Mathrubhumi as part of Sharjah International Book Festival. She has been an Intersala Student Partner
  • Letter written by Rajath Sebastian of BA English 2015 was selected to be published from an All India Competition conducted by the Human Resource Development Department of India to commemorate Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

Conference / Seminars

The students and faculty members participate in seminars and workshops to fine tune themselves with the shift in the academia.

On 17th December 2018 the department organized a workshop on "Feature/Creative writing in Journals by Mr Srikanth Kottakkal a senior journalist of Mathrubhumi and Editor in Charge of Mathrubhumi Varanthapathippu. A Feature writing competition followed the workshop and winners were awarded with prizes and certificates. The workshop opened up the various aspects of feature writing and the students were informed of the avenues of publication.

Outreach / Social Responsibility Programmes

Along with academics the students are open to organize various outreach programmes to satisfy their community commitments. The outreach and social responsibility programmes provide students with an opportunity to gather themselves in a unifying, team-building, hands-on practical activity that help the needy ones in the society. Students are encouraged to collaborate with various organizations and institutions and pave a spirit of social service and to develop an attitude to deem the society in an egalitarian and humane point of view. Besides, a good number of students are enrolled to the NSS units of the college and find an avenue to fulfill their drive of social responsibility apart from the outreach programmes plan by the department

  • KOOTU: School of English spent whole a day meaningfully with the inmates of an old age home and orphanage at Smile village Athirapilly. It was a learning process for the students about the emotional realms of the underprivileged. The students offered them a sumptuous lunch which was followed by a grand cultural programme.
  • Book Donation School of English launched a book donation programme and the student volunteers collected books form teachers and students inaddition to the books they themselves offered. The collected books were handed over to a flood-affected village library at Parakadavu.

Clubs and Associations

Students' Association – LITEVISTA –is a wonderful platform to channelize the creative output . Wizart and Avas were its earlier names when the department was a part of the School of media and communication

Litevista was inaugurated officially by Ms Smitha Namboodiri (Bureau chief. Deccan Chronicle ) on 31st January 2019. Principal Dr Unni C J Chaired the progamme and Fr George Pottayil V.C. the Director, officially launched the Book Collection campaign, the first initiative of the Club to support a flood affected rural library. A gala of music dance and stage performances followed the inauguration. It was a Cultural feast and the students synchronized art with creative freshness .Fusion and harmony mattered which displaced all sorts of discords and they called it as Litevista .The club has conceived some innovative enterprises and noble ventures to be executed in the forthcoming academic years.
The students of English department participate actively in various clubs of the college like Literary club, Debate club, Quiz club Dance club, Music Club, Women's club, Drama club, Nature club etc..


DePaul Institute of Science & Technology, has a unique culture of remaining competitive and updated. Upholding this view every academic year, Departments organize inter collegiate fest for aspirants assembling from various colleges with an urge to prove themselves.

Department Fest- Opus—The Media and Literary Fest has become a brand by its reach and magnitude. The fest offers a stunning platform for the students to demonstrate their competence in the various fields of media, literary and theatre events. Dignito was a common Fest which was hailed for the number of participants and the high standards it maintained.

Training & Skill Development Programmes

The students undergo one month training in media (either print or visual media) in the sixth semester. This gives them an avenue to practice and a platform to experiment their learning. Besides, the ‘on the job –training’ in media provides them with a firsthand experience of the latest trends and devices of the industry.

The department also prepares the students to sophisticate themselves and adapt to the requirements of the pedagogy . Orientation programmes are organized on regular basis to meet this objective.

Communication skills is very decisive in forming a competent student. Apart from the sessions in the curriculum, the department organizes soft skill trainings with the assistance of the Finishing School. We have planned further to introduce add on trainings in the coming years.

Remedial Coaching

Department takes effort to identify the students of frail academics and try to fill the lacunae by offering remedial measures.


The department is committed to the holistic development of the students. Every student is given ample support through a three tire mentoring system, viz. the class animators counselling, mentoring by the assigned mentor who compulsorily does it at least twice in a semester and by the college official counselor. The department has an inherent culture to maintain the mentor and mentee relationship professional, progressive and positive.

Study Tour/Industrial Visits

Study Tour & Industrial visit plays a vital role in the academic maturity and inculcation of a refined world view. The objectives of industrial visit is to provide students an insight regarding internal working of companies. It helps them to sharpen themselves and go beyond the limits of theoretical knowledge.

One month Job Training in Media helps the students to practice their learning and equip themselves with the latest developments in the industry. In the sixth semester, the students are allowed a study tour to explore themselves at different destinations of scenic beauty. It will help mental rejuvenation of the students and promotes a solemn fraternity.

  • In January 2019, the Final Year students went a study tour to Goa and Uduppi accompanied by Anju Krishnakumar and Rijo Thomas the Faculty Members.
  • In January 2018, the 2015 Batch students undertook a study tour to Mysore and Coorg and Bellur Mr Abhilash and Ms Rakhi Krishna accompanied them.
  • In December 2016, the 2014 Batch students enjoyed their study tour to Coorg and Chickamangloor. Mr Sanilkumar and Ms Rakhi Krishna accompanied them
  • In January 2016, the 2013 Batch students went a study tour to Kodaikanal and Munnar Dr Nirmal Jacob and Ms Anju Krishnakumar accompanied them.
  • In December 2015, the 2012 Batch students undertook their a study tour to Wyanad and Ootty. Mr. Renjith and Ms. Rakhi Krishna accompanied them.

Parent Teacher Association

The department is very alert at the holistic development of students and maintains a good rapport with the parent community. To evaluate the progress of the students regular PTA meetings are conducted once in every semester. The department conducts two internal examinations and the results of these examinations and the cumulative assessment of each students are discussed with the parents. It is an open platform for the parents to share their concerns and facilitates a warm teacher-parent interaction.


Majority of students opt for higher studies both in India and abroad. But the department is eager to organize recruitment drives towards the completion of the course. Some students placed by their own, with the backup of the training in the department, in the media industry.
