About School of Media

The School of Media & Communication had its inception in the year 2012 with the purpose of shaping graduates with a broad range of communication and multimedia production skills, in addition to an in-depth understanding of how multimedia is revolutionizing the current industry. The School has the technical competence and resources to handle varied aspects of Multimedia such as Film & TV Production, Audio, Radio Production, Animation, Graphics, Visual Effects, Acting, Scriptwriting & Direction, Creative Writing, Print & Electronic Journalism. The Faculty consists of a careful pooling of Academicians and Technicians with immense teaching and production experience. The School provides facilities such as a fully High Definition cameras, Video & Audio Production Studio fully equipped with high end editing facilities. The media department is also having Digital Lab with high end machines for each student.


School of Media and Communication equips aspiring media students to be well trained media professionals with a responsibility towards the society. Media students are molded to impart their duties towards the community they live in and thereby contributing to liberal thinking and moral values through powerful tools of media.

MA JMC - MA in Journalism & Mass Communication 2 Years (4 Sem.)

Master of Communication & Journalism is a two year Post graduate course which aims in training the students in the field of Journalism and Media Studies. The program is of four semesters that teaches various media topics like News Reporting, Business Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, Film Studies and Electronic Journalism (Television and Radio). The students of MCJ will be trained in Newspaper Production and they have to mandatorily complete one month internship in any media field in the fourth semester. MCJ course also offers Media research as a subject where the students have to do a research project in any media field.

Course Objective

The main objective of the MCJ programme is to prepare students for the exciting profession of Journalism, by meaningfully combining media theory and practice. The finished products are supposed to be socially responsible and responsive for the larger good of the people whom they serve, through the profession of Journalism.


Candidates for the M.C.J course shall have passed any degree examination of Mahatma Gandhi University with 45% marks or any examination recognized by it as equivalent there to. 5% relaxation in marks is given for SC/ST candidates. They shall be required to pass an Entrance Test- written and oral for admission or any other methodology adopted by the University. The process of selection will be subject to the rules and regulations regarding reservation.

MA in Multimedia 2 Years (4 Semesters)

Master of Arts in Multimedia is a two year course and is an emerging course in the field of media education in the 21st century. In this era of media explosion and ever changing media technology, students who aspire to explore the world of Media profession, Masters in Multimedia is a course to invent and rediscover your creativity and talents. This niche course provide the best of the topics to be learned and get trained for the future media market. Media students who study this course are trained in the field of Graphic Design, 3D Animation, Web & Interactive Media, Script Writing, Video-Audio Production and Photography.

Course Objective

Master’s level programme in Multimedia develops mature communication professionals who also have a deeper understanding of aesthetic aspects. The emphasis is on creative problem solving, using appropriate media for effective communication. Students are educated in line with the Institution’s goals of bringing up experts equipped with aesthetical and technical knowledge to work for the fast growing media field. The students are given opportunities to learn new skills to advance their level of understanding. The syllabus of MA Multimedia focuses on areas of unmet demands, such as projects based on social and educational relevance, rather than purely commercial values.


Basic academic qualification is a graduation in any field or graduation in Multimedia or a Diploma in Multimedia with 45% (However preference will be given to candidates with the following qualification : -Any Degree and a Diploma in Multimedia, Animation, Graphics, Videography, Film Appreciation, Journalism, Communication, Visual Arts, Painting, Theatre, Architecture and Music

BA - in Multimedia 3 Years (6 Semesters)

Bachelors of Arts in Multimedia is a basic course, designed with the objective of imparting knowledge and exposure for budding media professionals in the fields of Videography, Animation, Film and Electronic Editing, , Advertising and Journalism. The program consists of a total of 120 credits divided into six semesters with five papers each. There are two internship programs in semester IV and V. The final semester has two major projects in the field of Animation & Videography.

Course Objective

A basic programme in Multimedia is the initial step towards a formal and graded approach for a satisfying profession in various Media like Videography, Animation, Journalism, Advertising, Electronic Editing and ultimately in the Cinema Industry. A plus two student, who is a complete stranger to the above professions, should at the Degree level itself undertake a voyage of discovery, so that he/she would be able to assess his/her own potential for the above mentioned professions.


A pass in +2 or equivalent examination/any Degree with not less than 45% marks in aggregate

BA - in Animation and Visual Effects 3 Years (6 Semesters)

B.A Animation & Visual Effects (VFX) is a three year course consisting of six semesters. This course teaches Designing, Drawing, Animation Studio, Graphic Designing, Modelling, After Effects, 2D &3D Animation and Set designing. Animation course prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in the industry such as 3D Animation, 2D Animation, Film Visual effects, TV motion graphics, Game Industry and Advertisement Industry.

Course Objective

The Animation and Visual effect programme prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in the industry such as 3D Animation, 2D Animation , Film Visual effects, TV motion graphics, Game Industry and Advertising Industry.

The skills taught in the programme encompass craft at a technical level; yet also include design, drawing, critical thinking, creativity, daring, collaboration, and a fundamental awareness of theory and history. Throughout the program, students are engaged in all aspects of Animation/Visual effect design and production. The programme starts from concept development and production design to the completion of finished segments.


A pass in +2 or equivalent examination/any Degree with not less than 45% marks in aggregate.


Media Department has a rare distinction of having many University toppers since when the Media courses started in 2012 in DiST, Angamaly. We have the students in both Multimedia and Journalism courses with many first and second toppers in University examinations in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 batches.

  • The media department also creates an atmosphere for the Co-curricular and Extracurricular activities of the students that encourages exceptional talents in various art competitions. The media students also actively takes part in Inter –collegiate competitions and in the Mahatma Gandhi University Kalolsavam, Kottayam.Students of the Media department has secured 2nd position and ‘A’ grade for the Skit competition for the MG University Kalolsavam ‘Ashantham 2018’.


The Department of media gives a good platform for the faculties to engage in media research. We have faculties with good research background with one doctoral degree and four MPhil degrees. Many faculties have presented media research papers in both National and International seminars and conferences in various Indian Universities. Two of our faculties have got recognition in the field of Cinema and Drama for their innovative acting styles and presentations both internationally and nationally. One of our faculty has written and published book on Lighting which is a contribution in the field of Film and Theatre studies.

Conference / Seminars

Media Industry Interactions and Workshops

Workshops by eminent industry personalities were organized in the field of Acting and Visual Effects for the Animation and Multimedia students, on January 3 and 20 April 2018. These workshops were led by Mr. Tony Jose, CEO, Magmyth VFX studio who did the visual effects for popular movies like ‘Dhrishyam’ and ‘Ennu ninte moideen’.

  • Film Makeup classes were also conducted by renowned Makeup artist of Malayalam film industry Mr. P.V. Sankar who has done numerous popular films. The key areas of interactive session was to make the students aware of the current trends in different areas of film and television makeup. A workshop was also organized in Cinematography Animation students led by Mr. Vinodh Paul. A Two day Wildlife Photography workshop was conducted by wildlife photographer, Jimmy Kamballur and a one day Product Photshoot workshop was also conducted for Post Graduate Multimedia students in the campus.
  • A one day Public Relations workshop for Mass Communication and Journalism in 2018 led by Ms. Sini K Thomas, District information officer, Kerala Public Relation Department, Kottayam. The topic for the workshop was ‘Human Relations & Public Relations in the Digital world'
  • A one day Advertising and Vernacular Journalism Workshop for Mass Communication and Journalism students by Mr. Josey Joseph, Creative Director, Chithranjali group; Editorial board member of Adcom, the first Malayalam advertising magazine from the house of Malayalam Manorama.

Clubs and Associations

Media Association ‘AVAS’

Academy of Visual Arts and Sciences (AVAS) - is an association of De Paul School of Media & Communication, which aims to give an opportunity for media students studying in De Paul Institute of Science and Technology (DiST), Angamaly to explore in creative thinking, imagination and journalistic skills in the field of Short Films, Television Bulletins, Photo Journalism, Wall Journals, Lab Journals and Creative Designs.

Excellent students will be give recognition and motivation with ‘Certificate of Award of Merit’ for best works they produce in the field of Animated Show Reels, Photo journalism, Lab journals and other Creative Designs. The students are given an opportunity to exhibit their works through preview screening facilitated to them.

Training & Skill Development Programmes

The Journalism students had an industrial Interaction on Magazine Industry with Mr. Giby Joseph, Assistant Manager, Circulation, Mathrubhumi, Kozhikode. The Journalism students also had interaction with Advertising and Circulation managers of Deepika Newspaper, Kochi. They had discussions on strategies employed for a magazine launch, readership surveys and subscription drives.

Study Tour/Industrial Visits

  • School of Media and Communication conducted study tour to Goa, Karwar, Mysore-Bangalore, Munnar, Kodaikanal and Wyanad-Mysore-Coorg, for various batches.
  • The media students visited Jeeven TV channel to get a first-hand experience of how news is telecasted. The students were given an experience of how live broadcasting is done by the production team of Jeevan TV. The students also met and interacted with senior News Editor of Jeevan TV, Mr. Babu Joseph Velapaya. The Media students witnessed two live broadcasts aired from the Television studio.
  • The Journalism students conducted an industry visit to Viani Press in Ernakulam. The students of had hands on experience in the field of Printing and Publishing in Viani Printings. They interacted with publishing industry personalities which help them to understand the process of newspaper printing and various aspects of printing technology.
  • The Media students also took part in Asianet Television as volunteers for the audition of the reality show ‘SellMe the Answer – Season-3’ at Rajagiri School, Kalamassery, Ernakulam.
  • The Journalism students visited Deepika Newspaper office in Ernakulam. The students had the opportunity to see Newspaper production on a daily basis which equips them with expertise in Print Journalism. The Journalism students had an interaction with the City Editor of Deepika with regard to News Reporting and Newspaper Designing in Deepika Daily Newspaper. They also witnessed each step of newspaper production in the Publishing department.

Parent Teacher Association

Department of media has a strong Parents Teachers Association ( PTA) that enrich the bonding between the teachers and parents. PTA meetings are regularly conducted twice annually. The parents and teachers have mutual understanding to mould the students to make better citizens for the society during their course of their study. Department conducts one to one interaction with the parents on regular basis for the overall development of the students.

Career in Media Industry

Our DePaul media students are working in various renowned media houses and companies in various fields like Print Journalism, Television Journalism, Web Journalism, Animation and Graphic Designing companies, Event Management companies, Advertising Agencies, Information Technology Enables Services ( ITES), Public Relations firms and also into teaching professions in various colleges.

The students have to undergo an internship training period of one or two months in any of the media field of their choice, which equips them to be appointed in the organization they work according to their skill and hard work. In some companies there will be entrance test, analytical test and interview which the candidate has to pass which is a pre-requisite to get a job. Having more portfolios in one’s profile done during the course of study increases the chances of getting jobs in the media industry at the time of interview.

The prominent companies to name a few, were DiST media students working are; Times of India, Mathrubhumi News, Toons Animation Ltd, Wipro Ltd, Deepika daily newspaper, Janam TV, Jeevan TV, Flowers Television, Janayugam Newspaper, Mangalam Publications, Department of Information and Public Relations ( Govt. of Kerala), and Yellow Tooth, an advertising agency.


School of Media and Communication has a strong presence of Alumni, since when our first batch of students passed out in 2014. The department has created a strong base of alumni relations and has a great support from them in a short span of five years of our department history. The department organizes Alumni meet annually in the month of May which brings in a strong bonding between the Al mater and the alumni. Alumni bonding helps the department as the gateway for the industry relations with eminent personalities in media. Our Alumni are working in reputed media organizations in the field of Journalism, Graphic Designing, Animation, Film Industry and various corporate institutions.
