Along with academics the students are open to organize various outreach programmes to satisfy their community commitments. The outreach and social responsibility programmes provide students with an opportunity to gather themselves in a unifying, team-building, hands-on practical activity that help the needy ones in the society. Students are encouraged to collaborate with various organizations and institutions and pave a spirit of social service and to develop an attitude to deem the society in an egalitarian and humane point of view. Besides, a good number of students are enrolled to the NSS units of the college and find an avenue to fulfill their drive of social responsibility apart from the outreach programmes plan by the department.
The department is very much commited to inculcate social responsibility in students by exposing them to the immediate realities of the society. The outreach programme Kootu is intended to meet this noble goal of education.
On 9th March 2020 the students and staff of the department spent a whole day by sharing a meal and entertaining the inmates of Kripa Sadan, an old age home and orphanage for handicapped at Sreeemoolanagaram.
In 2019 the department spent whole a day meaningfully with the inmates of an old age home and orphanage at Smile village Athirapilly. It was a learning process for the students about the emotional realms of the underprivileged. The students offered them a sumptuous lunch which was followed by a grand cultural programme.
School of English launched a book donation programme and the student volunteers collected books form teachers and students in addition to the books they themselves offered. The collected books were handed over to a flood-affected village library at Parakadavu. more than three hundred and fifty books were handed over to the officials of the Village Libraray. Rev Fr George Pottayil V.C (Director DiST) Inaugurated the meeting. Dr.Unny C.J (Principal DiST) felicitated the function. Asst. Professor Rijo Thomas welcomed the gathering and Head of the Department, Asst. Professor Sanilkumar P.S expressed the vote of thanks . Mr K G Parameswaran, the president EMS Smaraka Grandhasala (The Library) expressed their gratitude and specially mentioned the quality of the books they received in his replay speech. All the students of the department actively participated in the campaign and in the donation programme.
School of English of DiST initiated a social outreach programme named ‘Patheyam’ with an aim of sharing food packets among the needy and the poor.
The first phase of the programme was inaugurated on 10th December 2021 by Director of the college, Fr. Jose Pottayil at General Hospital in Angamaly. Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Naseema Najeeb showered words of encouragement for the effort.
The programme was coordinated by Ms. Anna Gexon, the faculty in charge. Head of the Department Assistant Professor Sanilkumar P.S, Asst. Prof. Revathy T.S and student representatives of School of English attended the inaugural phase of the programme. The patients and the by standers were the benefactors of the Programme. In Patheyam programme all the students and faculty members of the department involved with great enthusiasm.
The second phase of the social outreach programme named ‘Patheyam’ aimed at sharing food packets among the needy and the poor was conducted on 7th January 2022. It was inaugurated by Mrs. Rosily C.J, Nurse Superintend, General Hospital, Angamaly. The Staff Coordinator of the Programme, Ms. Anna Gexon. Assistant Professor Mr. Rijo Thomas and representative students of the department participated in the programme.
