Training & Skill Development Programmes

The department prepares the students to sophisticate themselves and adapt to the requirements of the pedagogy. Orientation programmes are organized on regular basis to meet this objective. The bridge course offered by the department is intended mould the students to the pre requisites to pursue the programme . The department provides various Add -on-courses, like Web designing and content writing course, on public relations etc. that will make the students more competent and potential. The department provides placement trainings and carrier orientation programmes to make the students more eligible.

Delight 21

School of English in association with DiST Placements& Corporate relations (DPCR), organized an 'expert talk' for its students, as part of Deligh'21' on 3d December 2021 from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm. The resource person Mr.Rammohan Paliyath, Founder& CEO of Prsasidhi Communications, Kochi,gave a detailed talk on "Language Skills& Career Prospects'. Resource Person's session was followed by an active interaction session in which students asked about career prospects of English language and the resource person clarified all their doubts.

The Department of English organized a career orientation program for the students on 6th January 2020. The resource person Mr. Eldo Paul, Business Head and Chief Mentor, IMS Kerala took a two hour session providing new career objectives for the students. It was followed by an interactive session where the chief guest had a personal talk with students clearing their doubts and giving further clarifications on their dream career.

Literaria: A Platform to Debate on Literature

‘Literaria’ is an internal program intended for the academic development of both the faculty and students of the department. It aims at providing a first-hand experience in academic writing and presentation and an insight to the emerging literary theories as well.

Phase II- Student Development Programme

School of English organised, a platform to debate on literature on 6th March 2020.The program was from 1.30 to 3.30 pm. The program began with a prayer song by Ms. Milan John of ECJ17. Asst. Prof. Sanilkumar P.S, Head of the Department of English, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Unny C.J, Principal of DiST, delivered the inaugural address. Asst. Prof. Stalin A of school of management gave a lecture on how to do a paper presentation.

Five students from ECJ 2017-2020 batch, presented their papers on various topics;

School of English conducted an online programme of Literaria Phase II (SDP) at 10 am on 27th August 2020.Resource person of the day for the topic “Writing Academic Papers” was Asst. Prof. Subin George, School of Social Work, DiST. The session aimed at introducing students to the area of writing and publishing academic paper. The session was followed by paper presentations by students. Following students presented their papers:

Ann Mary George, Sayana and Ingitha, Jithin Shaji,Anupama Rajan.

Second online session of Literaria (SDP) was conducted at 2:30 pm on 28th October 2020 on the topic “An Overview of Indian Aesthetics”. Syam Kumar S, Faculty of Govt. Pre Examination Training Center, Visiting Member Faculty of Dravidian Language in NLP International served as the Resource person for the day. The session was followed by paper presentations by students. Following students presented their papers:

One Month Job Training in Media

The students undergo one month job training in media (either print or visual media) in the sixth semester. This gives them an avenue to practice and a platform to experiment their learning. Besides, the ‘on the job –training’ in media provides them with a first-hand experience of the latest trends and devices of the industry.

Communication skills is very decisive in forming a competent student. Apart from the sessions in the curriculum, the department organizes soft skill trainings with the assistance of the School of Professional Development. We have planned further to introduce add on trainings in the coming years.

‘Photography Competition’ was conducted as part of the launch of seminar series for the academic year 2019-20 on ‘Man, Literature and Environment’. The chief guest of the event was Mrs. Rahana Rafeek, freelance conservation wild life photographer, painter and a blogger.

‘Travelogue Writing Competition’ was conducted as a part of the inauguration of English Association Lite Vista on 4th September 2019, Mr. Santhosh George Kulangara, the founder and chief explorer of Safari TV was the chief guest of the programme.

Orientation to the students of ECJ 19 was given by Dr. Jose George, Rtd. Professor of English, Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam with the aim of introducing them to the diverse realms of the subject. He also familiarized students with the importance of new trends in creative writing.

On 17th December 2018 the department organized a workshop on "Feature/Creative writing in Journals by Mr Srikanth Kottakkal, a senior journalist of Mathrubhumi and Editor in Charge of Mathrubhumi Varanthapathippu. A ‘Feature Writing Competition’ followed the workshop and the winners were awarded with prizes and certificates.
