De Novo, a venture initiated by De Paul School of Social Work started in 2009 as a state level seminar. Later after the collaboration with JCU, Australia, De Novo progressed from a South Indian Social Work Students’ Meet to an International Social Work Students’ Meet. The purpose of conducting such an event is to proclaim the motto "A BETTER WORLD TO LIVE IN."
The conference is intended to allow discussion and consideration of a wide range of issues relating to social work. We organize National /International Conference every alternate year. Workshops and intercollegiate fests are also organized and students are also encouraged to attend conference/seminar in other colleges.
International conferences are organised under the De Novo brand. The social work students' meet, held in conjunction with De Novo, is another one-of-a-kind opportunity for our students and social work students from other institutions to learn and apply social work principles by doing.
On 2022, December 7th, 8th, and 9th, the social work department of De Paul Institute of Science and Technology (DiST) in Kerala, India, in partnership with James Cook University Australia, hosted an International Conference and Student's Meet. DiST has worked with James Cook University for 12 years. DiST's School of Social Work and James Cook University's Department of Social Work and Human Services collaborated to organise this conference. "Wellbeing and Thriving in an Uncertain World" was the subject of the De Novo 22.
Social work department of De Paul Institute of Science and Technology has conducted a conference on "Digital lifesaving solutions" on 28/09/2022 at seminar hall from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The conference was done by the Core Team including Mr Jeff Hardy, Ms Fern Hardy and Dr Chandhana Unnithan. They are from Canada having wide experience in maintaining digital health. The conference was held for undergraduate and post graduate students of social work department. They introduced the mobile application "life guard digital health" which aims at research, development clinical trials and implementation of digital solutions that are aimed at harm reduction for various public health challenges. After the conference there was a board meeting conducted with the officials from Canada and college management.
School of Social work in association with SADESS and Aster Medicity Organized an awareness session on organ donation, it was on 22nd August 2022 at 11:30 am at DiST seminar hall.
Ms. Anitta Francis, Senior transplant Coordinator, Aster Medicity Kochi took a great initiative to spread awareness on the Organ donation. An interactive session was done by them, so all the students including teachers got special chances to ask their doubts regarding organ donation and were explained in detail by them. This session on organ donation helped everyone to clear their confusions and to make aware about the importance of organ donation.
The Social work department of De Paul institute of Science and Technology in collaboration with SADESS had organised a one-day workshop on 11th July 2022 over the topic counselling and psychotherapy. The session was inaugurated by the principal Fr.(Dr.) Johny Chacko Mangalath VC, Fr.(Dr.) Robin Chittuparambil VC and Dr. Jessy L delivered felicitation in the open ceremony. The resource person for the day was Mrs. Milu Susan Thomas, counselling psychologist who truly alchemised in her expertise, the person who started Kerala’s first prenatal and perinatal counselling centre at Thrissur. The workshop was held for the postgraduate students as well as for the final year BSW. The students were able to grasp many new practical knowledge in their various theoretical frames related to counselling and psychotherapy.
The practical side of the therapies such as behavioural therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness was discussed deeply in the session and the session ended by 4 pm.
De Paul School of Social Work and SADESS hosted an academic writing workshop for Social Work students on APA (7th Ed.) style, content, stylistics, citation, and references. Mr. Jojo Jose, Asst. Prof. DiST, oversaw the programme. He provided appropriate assistance and motivation for organising this workshop for the students. The main goal of this class was to improve students' academic writing skills, make them more engaged, and exhibit their research abilities. Brother Joseph Charupplackal, Asst. Prof. School of Social Work, Marian College, Kuttikkanam (Autonomous), Trainer and Consultant in research methodology, particularly qualitative research academic writing utilising APA 7th ed, President of KAPS, Idukki Chapter, was the program's resource person.
De Paul school of Social work organizes national and International webinar series on relevant social work topics in collaboration with profound organizations.
The first international webinar was organized on the topic “Social work education and Mental Health: Changing context, emerging needs and Developing Innovative solutions”. It was organized in collaboration with the School of Social Work, James Cook University, Australia and Dr. Abraham Francis, the Head of the department JCU was the resource person. Nearly 800 participants registered and attended the Webinar.
A webinar on strengthening social solidarity and global connectedness was organised by the school of social work on 16/03/2021 in which the guest speaker was Dr Gracious Thomas, Director, SOSW, IGNOU, Delhi.
On 23rd March, 2021, a webinar was held on domestic violence act and the resource person was Adv. Jency Jose, Legal practitioner, Free Legal Aid Service for Woman, DiST.
