De Novo, a venture initiated by De Paul School of Social Work, started in 2009 as a state level seminar[cite: 29]. Later, after collaboration with JCU, Australia, De Novo progressed from a South Indian Social Work Students’ Meet to a prestigious International Social Work Students’ Meet[cite: 29]. The purpose of conducting such an event is to proclaim the motto "A BETTER WORLD TO LIVE IN."[cite: 29]
The conference is intended to allow discussion and consideration of a wide range of issues relating to social work[cite: 29]. We organize National and International Conferences every alternate year[cite: 29]. Workshops and intercollegiate fests are also organized, and students are strongly encouraged to attend conferences and seminars in other colleges to expand their horizons[cite: 29].
International conferences are organized under the De Novo brand[cite: 29]. The social work students' meet, held in conjunction with De Novo, is another one-of-a-kind opportunity for our students and social work students from other institutions to learn and apply social work principles by doing[cite: 29].
On December 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2022, the social work department of De Paul Institute of Science and Technology (DiST) in Kerala, India, in partnership with James Cook University Australia, hosted an International Conference and Student's Meet[cite: 29]. DiST has worked closely with James Cook University for 12 years[cite: 29]. DiST's School of Social Work and James Cook University's Department of Social Work and Human Services collaborated to organize this conference[cite: 29]. "Wellbeing and Thriving in an Uncertain World" was the thought-provoking subject of De Novo 22[cite: 29].
The Social work department of De Paul Institute of Science and Technology conducted a conference on "Digital lifesaving solutions" on 28/09/2022 at the seminar hall[cite: 29]. The conference was led by a Core Team including Mr. Jeff Hardy, Ms. Fern Hardy, and Dr. Chandhana Unnithan[cite: 29]. Hailing from Canada, they possess wide experience in maintaining digital health[cite: 29]. The conference was held for undergraduate and post graduate students of the social work department[cite: 29]. They introduced the mobile application "life guard digital health," which aims at research, development, clinical trials, and implementation of digital solutions aimed at harm reduction for various public health challenges[cite: 29].
School of Social work, in association with SADESS and Aster Medicity, organized an awareness session on organ donation on 22nd August 2022 at the DiST seminar hall[cite: 29].
Ms. Anitta Francis, Senior Transplant Coordinator at Aster Medicity Kochi, took a great initiative to spread awareness on Organ donation[cite: 29]. An interactive session was conducted, providing all students and teachers with a special chance to ask doubts regarding organ donation, which were explained in detail[cite: 29]. This highly informative session helped everyone clear their confusions and understand the vital importance of organ donation[cite: 29].
The Social work department of De Paul institute of Science and Technology, in collaboration with SADESS, organized a one-day workshop on 11th July 2022 covering counselling and psychotherapy[cite: 29]. The session was inaugurated by the principal Fr.(Dr.) Johny Chacko Mangalath VC, and Fr.(Dr.) Robin Chittuparambil VC and Dr. Jessy L delivered felicitations in the opening ceremony[cite: 29].
The resource person for the day was Mrs. Milu Susan Thomas, a counselling psychologist who truly alchemized her expertise, and the pioneer who started Kerala’s first prenatal and perinatal counselling centre at Thrissur[cite: 29]. The workshop was held for postgraduate students as well as final year BSW students[cite: 29]. The students grasped new practical knowledge in various theoretical frames related to counselling and psychotherapy[cite: 29].
The practical side of therapies such as behavioural therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and mindfulness were discussed deeply, concluding an enriching session[cite: 29].
De Paul School of Social Work and SADESS hosted an academic writing workshop for Social Work students focused on APA (7th Ed.) style, content, stylistics, citation, and references[cite: 29]. Mr. Jojo Jose, Asst. Prof. DiST, oversaw the programme, providing appropriate assistance and motivation for organizing this workshop[cite: 29]. The main goal was to improve students' academic writing skills, make them more engaged, and exhibit their research abilities[cite: 29]. Brother Joseph Charupplackal, Asst. Prof. School of Social Work at Marian College, Kuttikkanam, a Trainer and Consultant in research methodology—particularly qualitative research academic writing utilizing APA 7th ed—and President of KAPS Idukki Chapter, served as the resource person[cite: 29].
De Paul school of Social work continuously organizes national and international webinar series on relevant social work topics in collaboration with profound organizations[cite: 29].
The first international webinar was organized on the topic “Social work education and Mental Health: Changing context, emerging needs and Developing Innovative solutions”[cite: 29]. It was organized in collaboration with the School of Social Work, James Cook University, Australia, and Dr. Abraham Francis, the Head of the department JCU, was the resource person[cite: 29]. Nearly 800 participants registered and attended the highly successful webinar[cite: 29].
A webinar on strengthening social solidarity and global connectedness was organized by the school of social work on 16/03/2021 in which the guest speaker was Dr Gracious Thomas, Director, SOSW, IGNOU, Delhi[cite: 29].
On 23rd March 2021, a webinar was held on the domestic violence act, led by resource person Adv. Jency Jose, Legal practitioner for Free Legal Aid Service for Women, DiST[cite: 29].
