School of
Spcial Work
A good number of extension and outreach programs are organized by the department of social work for the last few years. With the Nedumbaseery Panchayath the students were insisted to do a case study on airport and climate change in Nedumbassery. With the NULM, a survey was done to know the life standard of the street vendors in 2016.
The department is also very much interested to observe World Aids Day, Anti Narcotic day, Women’s Day, World Health day, Environment Day, World Social Work Day etc., and conducted many awareness programmes through street plays and other participatory programs in various communities for past years and still continue the same with strong conviction and enthusiasm.
Outreach programs are also given prime focus by the social work department and all those programmes are coordinated with De Paul Extension Service. Social Impact Analysis, Blood donation camps, skill development classes for the school children, health education for Anganwady children, income generation programme for women, free medical camps are examples for the extension activities.
As part of the environment day programme go- green campaign was conducted in Kalady Panchayath by School of social work department in collaboration with De Paul extension Service and in association with the CSR initiative of Muthoot Finance. Rev. Fr.(Dr.) Robin Chittuparambil VC (Vice principal, De Paul institute of science and technology) inaugurated the programme. All social work students were instructed to clean the road side and to collect plastic wastes in Ashram road. It was a social campaign to make students as well as the society aware of the importance of protecting environment and make it plastic free. Every student put in their best efforts. Both students and natives worked hand in hand and made the programme a great success.
Eco benches were built in five panchayats Malayatoor, Chengamanad, Parakadavu, Karukutty and Kunnukara. Both students and faculties joined together to build eco-friendly benches for the community. There were 10 benches made out of used plastic bottles to convey a message to the society to realise, reuse, and reform. This is a great initiative from social work department in collaboration with Muthoot Finance CSR initiative to celebrate environment day successfully. Together Co2 project Social Work department and DES successfully completed eco brick bench construction. The motive of this project was to make students and society aware of the after effects of plastic waste in the environment. The programme is very useful for the future generation. Students collected the plastic bottles from the college, panchayaths and from their home surroundings. There were 1500 bottles collected for the purpose of bench making. By seeing the massive quantity collected, we were amazed how much plastic has been used by us. To give an awareness about reusing the plastic wastes to the society, these benches were built. Each bottle was filled with mud, aligned between the pillars of bricks up to 3 to 4 feet high and was covered with concrete on top. This sturdy bench can be used by people to take rest. All panchayath presidents and residents were happy with this helpful activity. The 1st bench was made on 8th of June 2022 in the premises of School of Social Work. Due to some political circumstances both Ayyampuzha and Manjapra panchayaths refused permit to build benches in their panchayaths, therefore the agency had to build these benches in Kunnukara and Malayatoor panchayaths. On 10th of June two benches each were made in Parakadavu, Karukutty, Kunnukara and Chengamanad panchayaths. On the request of Kunnukara and Malayatoor panchayaths, 2 benches were clubbed together and was built as one. On 14th of June 2022, a bench was built on Adivaram Malayatoor.
